Sweet and Spicy Infused Margaritas for the WIN!

As spring has sprung here in Iowa, I’ve been looking forward to the backyard BBQ’s and margarita parties (with covd-safety in mind, of course)! Margaritas can be a bit sweet and sugary if you use store bought mixes, so I like to make my mine from scratch by combining the tequila with this easy citrusy simple syrup: combine 1 cup sugar + 1 cup water, bring to a boil, then chill. Stir in about a 1/2 cup of fresh lemon and/or lime juice. Cover and store in the fridge until serving time.

The key to the BEST margaritas? INFUSE your tequila! I usually make two versions: one with fresh pineapple and another with hot chile peppers, such as jalapeños or Serranos. And it’s SO easy! Just fill a jar with bottle of your favorite tequila, then add chopped fruit or peppers. Cover the jar and let it stand about 1 week. When it’s margarita time, strain the fruit you’re ready to mix! You’ll be surprised how much flavor this adds to your cocktails.

I love to mix my pineapple and chile tequilas for a sweet and spicy margarita that never fails to be the life of the party. If tequila isn’t for you, try infusing vodka with your favorite fruit, berry, or tea!
