There are so many ways to change up this basic sauce. Like your BBQ sauce spicy? Add 1 canned chipotle pepper, minced, plus some hot sauce or extra black pepper. Want it a little chunkier? Saute ½ cup finely chopped onion and ¼ cup finely chopped red bell pepper in 1 Tbsp. butter or veg oil until tender before adding the other ingredients. No tomato sauce on hand? Swap in ketchup!
